Armenian Parliament has elected new Prosecutor General during a secret ballot.

The ruling Civil Contract party nominated Anna Vardapetyan, former Deputy Minister of Justice, Assistant to the Prime Minister of Armenia, for this position. 70 deputies unanimously voted for it.

The parliamentary opposition boycotted the session of the National Assembly and therefore did not take part in the secret ballot.

Being an assistant to the Prime Minister, Vardapetyan was at the center of the scandal.

A record was shared in the media, from which it followed that she "edited" the criminal cases concerning Ruben Hayrapetyan and his son. Taking these facts as a basis, the opposition questioned both the integrity of the candidate and her ability to act independently.

The opposition insists that, as an assistant to the prime minister, she is, in fact, a member of the ruling team.
