The visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan is not just a trip of a single irresponsible politician, but a brazen demonstration of disrespect for the sovereignty of other countries, a carefully planned provocation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, RIA Novosti reported.

"The American adventure on Taiwan is not just a trip by a single irresponsible politician, but part of a deliberate, conscious U.S. strategy to destabilize and chaotize the situation in the region and the world, a brazen display of disrespect for the sovereignty of other countries and for its international obligations. We see this as a carefully planned provocation," Putin said in his address to the participants and guests of the 10th Moscow Conference on International Security.

According to Putin, "once again, the US has deliberately tried to add fuel to the fire and inflame the situation in the Asia-Pacific region."

Pelosi's visit to Taiwan was the first visit to Taiwan by a US House speaker since 1997, making her the highest-ranking US official to visit the island in 25 years.
