Armenian News - NEWS.am presents the breaking news as of 16.08.22:

  • Armenian rescuers have recovered more bodies from the site of a fireworks warehouse blast in Yerevan, raising the death toll from Sunday's explosion to 16, the emergencies ministry said on Tuesday.

There are over 60 people injured after blasts ripped through the warehouse in a market.

Also 17 people are considered missing. A total of 350 rescuers are participating in the search and rescue operations at the market, and about 150 volunteers are helping them. The total number of injured is 61. Twelve of them continue to be treated in various hospitals, and their health condition is assessed as satisfactory. The other hospitalized patients have been discharged with positive dynamics of their condition. Also, 21 vehicles have been removed from under the rubble.

  • Emergency situations minister Armen Pambukhchyan said a pregnant woman and а young child were among the dead, and that search and rescue efforts were ongoing as of Tuesday morning.

Video shared by the emergencies ministry showed rescuers sifting through a smoldering pile of rubble and twisted metal.

It was not clear what caused the blast, which took place in the large Surmalu market, although authorities have ruled out terrorism.

  • The government said it would declare a day of mourning after the rescue operation is over.

It will decide the date of this day of mourning once the search and rescue operations at the site of the blast are concluded.

  • Meanwhile, Armenian authorities have ordered a series of evacuations in Yerevan following a blast on Sunday.

Armenian media says the city has received bomb threats against all the city's airport, metro stations, major military and civilian facilities, shopping centers, the city zoo and the Saint Grigor Lusavorich Church.

City police ordered extensive evacuations following the reported threats.

It is unclear whether the explosion in the Surmalu market earlier Sunday was related to the threats. The affected building was used to house fireworks, but officials have not stated whether that caused the explosion.
