At least 21 people were killed and 33 injured in an explosion at a mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul during evening prayers on Wednesday, Al Jazeera reported, citing police.

"Yesterday there was an explosion in a mosque ... during evening prayers. As a result, 21 of our citizens were killed and 33 were wounded," Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said Thursday.

Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid earlier confirmed the dead and wounded but did not specify the number.

"The killers of civilians and the perpetrators ... will soon be punished for their crimes," he wrote on Twitter.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for what happened.
