Clear-cut sanctions may be another lever to stop expansionist ambitions of Azerbaijan, said Armenian parliament speaker Alen Simonyan on Sunday.

"We are grateful to the U.S. for its efforts in mediating the fragile ceasefire agreement reached on September 14," he noted.

He added that the previous meeting discussed Azerbaijan's military aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia on September 13.

"I reported that the Azerbaijani armed forces subjected not only Armenian border positions, but also many settlements and civil infrastructure facilities to brutal bombardment, as a result of which there are many human casualties. It is clear that the military and political power of Azerbaijan is taking advantage of the fact that the international community is riveted to the developments in Ukraine," the Armenian speaker said.

Alen Simonyan noted that they are also grateful to U.S. authorities, particularly for the targeted assessment of Azerbaijan's military actions by numerous congressmen. "Any U.S. assistance is vital to our statehood. We believe that clear sanctions can be another lever to stop Azerbaijan's expansionist ambitions and authoritarian war against democracy," he said.
