German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was "irritated" by Turkey's attempts to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Reuters reported.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that he targets Turkey's membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

"This is not an organization that makes a significant contribution to good, global coexistence," Scholz said at the U.N. General Assembly in New York after meeting with Erdogan. "So I’m very annoyed with this development," he said.

Earlier in an interview with PBS television, Erdogan said that Ankara does not intend to account to the European Union for its participation in the SCO summit. "The European Union will hold us back for 52 years, won't let us come close to it, and then ask: "Why did he meet with this country, why did he meet with another country?" I will negotiate. By conducting these negotiations, we are not accountable to the European Union at this point," he said.
