The first political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Armenia and Canada were held in Ottawa on Wednesday. Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan and Canadian Deputy Foreign Minister Sandra McCardell represented the Armenian side.

During the consultations, the parties discussed issues related to the implementation of Canadian Ambassador Stephen Dion's report on supporting democracy in Armenia, Armenian MFA press service informed NEWS.am. Both sides attached importance to Canada's decision to open an embassy in Armenia to further develop and expand Armenian-Canadian friendly relations. The sides also discussed the issue of interaction within the international organizations.

The sides touched upon issues related to regional security and current issues on the international agenda. In this context, Hovhannisyan presented the recent Azerbaijani aggression against the sovereign territory of Armenia and its consequences, as well as the efforts of the partner countries towards the establishment and maintenance of the cease-fire regime and the current situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

During the visit, the Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister also met with Canadian Deputy Foreign Minister Cynthia Termorshuizen, Deputy Minister of International Trade David Morrison and others.

Hovannisyan also met with members of the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group. He also gave a lecture on Armenia's foreign policy at Carleton University in Ottawa.
