German opposition leader Friedrich Merz accused Ukrainian refugees of taking advantage of Germany's welfare system.

"What we are seeing is charitable tourism by these refugees to Germany, and then back to Ukraine," Merz, leader of the center-right Christian Democrats (CDU), told Bild TV, adding that "most" of the more than 1.1 million Ukrainian refugees registered in Germany are milking the state. "We have a problem that is getting worse."

The German government has no statistics on whether and to what extent the abuses Mertz speaks of actually take place, Politico reported.

Merz said it is "unfair" of the state to pay for heating the homes of refugees and German welfare recipients at a time when many working-class Germans cannot afford their energy bills. "It's unfair, and the population has a right to consider it unfair," he said.
