Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has filed a lawsuit against a German lawmaker for calling him a cesspool rat, Bianet reported, citing the Turkish leader's lawyer.

Mustafa Kaplan, Erdogan's lawyer, filed a criminal libel suit against Wolfgang Kubicki of Germany's ruling Free Democratic Party on behalf of his client.

Kubicki made the comment during an election rally to draw attention to the growing number of illegal migrants heading from Turkey via the "Balkan route" to Germany, Reuters reported.

The deputy told the German news agency dpa that he was not concerned about the lawsuit.

The Turkish leader had previously won a case in Germany, barring comedian Jan Bemermann from repeating excerpts from a satirical poem mocking Erdogan.

Turkey's foreign ministry summoned the German ambassador to Ankara over Kubicki's remarks about Erdogan, according to news website Artı Gerçek.

According to Article 299 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), "insulting" the president is a crime and carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison.
