The riots in Iran were pre-arranged by the United States and Israel, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said, Press TV reported.

"I clearly state that these events were planned by America, the Zionist regime and their henchmen. Their main problem is a strong and independent Iran and the progress of the country. The Iranian nation has shown itself to be strong enough during the recent events," he said.

Protests over the death of Makhsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman who collapsed in a police station on September 16 and was later pronounced dead in a hospital, erupted first in her home province of Kurdistan and then spread to other parts of the country, including Tehran. The protests soon escalated into violent riots, with rioters rampaging across the country, attacking security personnel, vandalizing government property, and desecrating religious shrines.

"If not for the death of a young girl, they would have come up with another excuse to create instability and provoke unrest," he said.

"A lot of unrest has broken out around the world, including in Europe. In France and Paris in particular, there are riots from time to time. But it begs the question: has it ever happened that the President of the United States and the House of Representatives supported rioters and made statements? Has it ever happened that media affiliated with American capitalism and their mercenaries in the region, including the Saudis, have supported rioters in other countries? And was there a case of Americans announcing the provision of certain Internet equipment to rioters so that they could easily communicate with each other?"

He noted that Americans' expressions of regret over Amini's death are hypocritical. "They are happy because they found an excuse to foment insecurity," he said.
