Traditional citywide New Year and Christmas events in St. Petersburg will be canceled, but children will not be deprived of "Christmas trees". The decision was made at a meeting of Governor Alexander Beglov with members of the city government, reports the press service of Smolny today.

The concert on Palace Square and Nevsky Prospect, the traditional fireworks display, the "Christmas Star" fire festival and the charity reception at the Tavricheskiy Palace are cancelled.

"The savings will be used in an earmarked way under an item allocated in the budget of St. Petersburg for the purchase of additional equipment and gear for volunteers and mobilized," the administration added.
