Matters of ensuring regional energy security and energy independence have become the key topic of the meeting between Georgia's Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili and Azerbaijan's Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov, held in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, writes NewsGeorgia.ge.

"The ministers discussed the complex situation created in the region, which showed even more clearly the importance of energy security and energy independence," reports the press service of the Ministry of Economy of Georgia.

The parties emphasized the strengthening of regional cooperation in electricity industry. In this regard, they pointed to the project that shall connect the energy systems of Georgia and Europe.

According to Shahbazov, this project, which will include Azerbaijan and Hungary in addition to Georgia and Romania, diversifies the energy sources being supplied to Europe, and will be the continuation of the joint initiatives of Azerbaijan and Georgia on energy security. He also noted that the success of this initiative is guaranteed by the "tremendous potential" of wind energy in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian Sea and the support of the EU and the World Bank.

Davitashvili, in turn, called this project "historic" for Georgia. He confirmed that Tbilisi is ready to create a new format of cooperation on the underwater transmission line.

The meeting also discussed the current and planned measures related to the increase of electricity export and transit, as well as the expansion of cooperation between Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey in electricity.

An exchange of ideas also took place regarding cooperation on renewable energy sources and in a number of other domains.

It was noted that the main role of strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Georgia belongs to energy cooperation.
