The first face-to-face meeting between Chinese and U.S. leaders Xi Jinping and Joe Biden kicked off on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali.

According to CNN, the two leaders shook hands and sat down at the negotiating table, surrounded by officials from each side.

In his opening remarks, Biden said he and Xi had a responsibility to show their countries could manage differences and identify areas of mutual cooperation.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping said the world's attention is riveted on the meeting of the two leaders.

China-U.S. relations are currently in a situation that worries all of us because it is not in the fundamental interest of our two countries and peoples, and it is not what the international community expects of us, Xi Jinping said.

He said the world expects China and the United States to properly resolve the relationship.

Xi said he was ready for a frank and comprehensive exchange of views with Biden on strategically important issues of Sino-US relations as well as major global and regional issues.
