Germany's economy grew slightly more than expected in the third quarter, helped by consumer spending.

Europe's largest economy grew 0.4 percent quarter on quarter and 1.3 percent year on year, adjusted for price and calendar effects, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected the economy to grow 0.3 percent in the third quarter from the previous quarter and 1.2 percent year-over-year.

Household spending was the main reason for the jump in quarterly numbers, as consumers traveled more and left home after nearly all pandemic-related restrictions were lifted.

In its latest forecast, the government predicted that the economy would grow 1.4 percent this year and decline 0.4 percent next year.

A spokesman for the economy said current indicators still point to a recession in the six months through March.
