Next week, on November 30, the Bundestag will vote on recognizing the Holodomor as the "genocide of the Ukrainian people," Spiegel wrote with reference to the draft resolution.

The vote is initiated by parliamentarians from the Social Democratic Party, the Greens, the Free Democratic Party, and the Christian Democratic Union.

The entire Ukraine suffered from hunger and repression, not only its grain-producing regions. From today's perspective, the historical-political classification as genocide is obvious. The German Bundestag shares such a classification, the draft document says.

In 1932-1933, the major grain areas of the USSR were covered by famine. As a result of the food crisis, according to various estimates, 7 to 8 million people of different nationalities died in the country. There is no accurate data on the number of deaths from the famine in the USSR. According to estimates by contemporary demographers, the probable excess death rate for the Ukrainian SSR in 1933 was between 2.2 million and 3.9 million people.

The Ukrainian authorities declared the Holodomor "genocide" in 2006. Moscow called Kyiv's actions an attempt to politicize history and divide the Russian and Ukrainian peoples.
