Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said he will not wait for elections in Turkey to join NATO but will focus on the job now, Svenska Dagbladet reported.

"I don't think we should rely on any assumptions about the possible outcome of the elections in Turkey, we should concentrate on what the government is focused on - becoming a member of NATO as soon as possible.

We can only become NATO members when the Turkish and Hungarian parliaments ratify Sweden's and Finland's application, and that is why this is the focus of the government," Billström noted.

The Swedish foreign minister explained that the new Swedish government does not have the kind of conflict with Turkey that has caused it to reject NATO membership, primarily over the Kurdish issue.
