The newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay to the Republic of Armenia, Eduardo Rosenbrock Bidart, presented his credentials to Armenian President Vahagn Khachatryan, the press service of the Republic's President informed NEWS.am.

Congratulating the first resident ambassador of Uruguay, Vahagn Khachaturyan expressed hope that the opening of the Uruguayan Embassy in Armenia and this appointment will serve as a new impetus for the development of Armenian-Uruguayan friendly relations.

Expressing gratitude for the reception, the newly appointed Ambassador noted that he would do his best to strengthen the Armenian-Uruguayan economic and cultural relations and to elevate the political dialogue to a new level.

During the meeting the President touched upon the best traditions of the Armenian-Uruguayan relations, stressing that since the Soviet Union times Uruguay has been a native country for the whole Armenian society, which is known as the first state which recognized the Armenian Genocide.

"I am confident that our embassy will also open soon, and this will really be a new impetus for our relations. We will be able to make more use of our opportunities. We are talking in particular about economic relations and, why not, tourism and culture," Khachaturyan said.

Ambassador Eduardo Rosenbrock Bidart conveyed the greetings of Uruguayan President Luis Alberto Lacalle to the Armenian president, noting that he was honored to be Uruguay's first resident ambassador to Armenia.

"This is the first time Uruguay opens an official representation in Armenia. And this is despite the fact that the history of Uruguay's friendship with the Government of Armenia and the Armenian people is more than a hundred years old. Of course, the Armenian community of Uruguay is not as big as the Armenian community of Argentina. However, regardless of that, I must note that the role of the Armenian community in Uruguay, which has a population of three and a half million people is very significant and important," the Ambassador said.

During the meeting, the Armenian President and the newly appointed Ambassador of Uruguay discussed a wide range of issues related to the potential of the Armenian-Uruguayan cooperation in digitalization, high technologies and other spheres. The possibility of opening the "Tumo" center in Uruguay was touched upon. At the end of the meeting, both sides attached importance to the opening of the Armenian Embassy in Montevideo next year.
