Japan intends to carry out joint counterstrikes against enemy bases if attacked as part of its plans to launch counterstrikes against the United States, Kyodo news agency reported.

According to the agency, this position is being discussed in the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito Party. Such strikes, according to media reports, would target military targets only, but the interpretation could also involve counterstrikes against other targets, including command centers.

A government decision in this regard is expected to be made by the end of the year, along with a revision of the National Security Strategy and other basic defense policy documents. Then such provisions could be included directly in the text of the National Security Strategy.

The Japanese government is concerned about the deterioration of the security situation around the country due to the development of North Korea's nuclear missile program, which is advancing extremely quickly, as well as China's growing power and the situation around Ukraine.
