YEREVAN. – There is no alternative to peaceful talks in order to reach efficient resolution of the Karabakh conflict,  said Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.

Nalbandian’s remark came after his meeting with newly appointed EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Philippe Lefort in Yerevan.

The Minister congratulated Lefort on his appointment and wished success in his future activities.

“We used the opportunity of today’s meeting to discuss Armenia-EU relations which have been recently developing positively. We also touched upon the issues concerning the forthcoming Eastern Partnership summit and Armenia’s association agreement,” he said.

The sides are working at creation of free trade zone, he said expressing confidence that Armenia and EU will be able to reach agreement on relaxation of visa requirements shortly.

“We also discussed the regional problems, in particular recent developments in the Karabakh peace process. I welcome EU’s aspiration to intensify its role in talks and assist mediatory efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group.

EU repeatedly voiced statements on the issue and we are confident there is no alternative to peaceful talks. Any attempts to use force or threat of force will be condemned by the international community,” Nalbandian said recalling the statement made on the sidelines of G8 summit in Deauville.
