Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy became the man of the year according to the influential British newspaper Financial Times, as reported by the publication on Monday.

"Zelenskyy has also come to embody the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russian aggression. It is for these reasons that the Financial Times has chosen Zelenskyy as the person of the year," the publication explained.

The FT notes that Ukraine surprised the entire world when it withstood a full-scale Russian invasion in February and then recaptured most of the territories that had been seized.

The British newspaper drew attention to the effectiveness of Ukrainian diplomacy and Zelenskyy's work in this direction. It is noted that Kyiv has managed to rally the West into a coalition in support of Ukraine, in particular in terms of finances and arms supplies.

Before and after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, American partners offered Zelenskyy to evacuate, but he refused. The publication cites a number of other actions of the Ukrainian president, which inspired not only the citizens of Ukraine, but also Western allies.

In particular, the FT recalls: "EU leaders were horrified when Zelenskyy told them by video link that it might be the last time they saw him alive. But later that night Zelenskyy, standing out in the open near the presidential office and flanked by his closest advisers, sent a message by video selfie that millions of Ukrainians had wanted to hear: “The president is here. We are all here. Our soldiers are here.”
