Belief in the paranormal reduces the quality of sleep. An article about this has been published in the Journal of Sleep Research.

The study was conducted through an online survey, which was announced in social networks and in the journal BBC Science Focus Magazine. A total of 8,853 participants over the age of 18 were selected, all of whom were asked questions about supernatural phenomena and their night sleep. People were asked about their belief in the life after death, the existence of angels and demons, the possibility of communicating with the dead and the visit of aliens to Earth.

It turned out that belief in such phenomena statistically impairs sleep quality. In addition, the belief that aliens visited Earth is associated with isolated sleep paralysis and exploding head syndrome, a disorder characterized by a sensation of loud noise or rumbling inside the skull.

Isolated sleep paralysis, in which a person is aware and awake but unable to move, without other symptoms of a sleep disorder such as narcolepsy, has also been linked to the belief that near-death experiences are evidence of life after death.

Scientists have two possible explanations for this phenomenon. On the one hand, sleep paralysis, exploding head syndrome and some other sleep disorders cause auditory and visual hallucinations. Some people may consider them to be manifestations of the otherworld or alien activity. On the other hand, the belief in paranormal phenomena, which are often hostile or dangerous to people, can cause anxiety, which causes a decrease in the quality of sleep.
