Environmental group Friends of the Earth Germany is suing the government over its failure to meet climate goals, AP reports.

Friends of the Earth Germany, also known as BUND, said in an application to the administrative court in Berlin-Brandenburg that the government should put forward an emergency program for the transportation and construction sectors. Both sectors have fallen behind their legally binding greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The group, which has more than 450,000 members, says Germany has little time left to meet its national climate goals by 2030 and achieve "net-zero" emissions by 2045.

A report released earlier this month by the Agora Energiewende think tank concluded that Germany's emissions of gas heating the planet last year were probably above the 2020 goal.
