Armenian MP Armen Gevorgyan, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) main rapporteur on local and regional authorities, on Tuesday met with president Leendert Verbeek and secretary general Mathieu Mori of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CoE).

The National Assembly of Armenia informs Armenian News-NEWS.am that during the meeting, the discussion of local and regional matters and issues at the upcoming fourth summit of the CoE was highlighted. Also, the interlocutors stated that in a number of CoE member countries, inadmissible problems related to local democracy are recorded, which contradict the European Charter of Local Self-Government.

It was agreed that the facts and circumstances regarding local democracy recorded by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in CoE member states should become a serious subject of attention by all CoE bodies.

Gevorgyan presented information to the president and secretary general of the aforesaid congress regarding the unacceptable situation created around Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the humanitarian crisis created by the ongoing Azerbaijani blockade of Artsakh. Basically, this blockade is not the only manifestation of the fight of the Azerbaijani authorities against democracy.

Armen Gevorgyan highlighted the importance of keeping the developments around Artsakh in the center of attention of the Coe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, especially since, apart from everything else, a trend is noticed among Azerbaijani authorities to change the status of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The parties mutually agreed to continue intensive cooperation between PACE and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe.
