The U.S. President makes no secret of the need to work more actively with the Turkish opposition in order to form a strong opposition and to initiate more democratic processes in Turkey, international expert Suren Sargsyan told NEWS.am.

"According to the U.S., Turkey is heading toward a classic dictatorship, and something needs to be done to prevent this from happening. In other words, the U.S. considers Erdogan a problematic partner and would be much happier if someone with much more liberal values were in his place. This does not mean that they will support anyone in the election.

"On the other hand, it cannot be ruled out that Erdogan's rating may rise in the near future, because if he succeeds in mediating between Russia and Ukraine, his role in the world will increase. It seems that some steps in this direction are being taken. Both in Turkey and abroad, including Russia, are being taken into account. Russia can give this laurel to Erdogan by saying you can be a mediator. Turkey will try to use it," he added.
