Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis agreed Monday to strengthen their security, defense and economic ties and pledged to cooperate in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and other threats in Europe and Asia, AP reported.

They said they agreed to upgrade their countries' relationship to a strategic partnership, and defense ties will cover military equipment and technology.

In a joint statement after the talks in Tokyo, the two leaders said they recognized the importance of strengthening NATO engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and further developing NATO cooperation with Japan.

Kishida and Mitsotakis stressed the importance of the two maritime nations working together to ensure free and safe navigation on open waterways and agreed that Japanese Coast Guard training ships will visit Greece later this year to improve communication and cooperation.

The two leaders expressed strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion that increase tensions and undermine regional stability and international order everywhere, including the Eastern Mediterranean, East China Sea and South China Sea.
