The Italian government would be happy to support former Prime Minister Mario Draghi in a possible new job as European Union representative, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Thursday.

The German newspaper Handelsblatt reported this week that Draghi is being considered for the position of special envoy for the EU's Global Gateway strategy.

Brussels unveiled a 300 billion-euro ($327.36 billion) global infrastructure spending plan for the Global Gateway in 2021, calling it a better and greener alternative to China's Belt and Road initiative.

Beijing launched its plan in 2013 to expand its trade ties with the world, and Central Asia is among the regions where China has since invested heavily.

Draghi is well respected in EU circles as the former head of the European Central Bank (ECB), who helped shore up the euro during the 2011-2012 sovereign debt crisis.

He led a coalition government in Italy from 2021-2022, which was replaced in October by the right-wing administration of Georgia Meloni.
