The production and trafficking of drugs from Afghanistan is growing, despite assurances from the Taliban who have been in control of the country since August 2021, Director of the Drug Control Agency under the President of Tajikistan Habibullo Vohidzoda said at a press conference in Dushanbe.

Tajikistan has seen an increase in drug seizures from Afghanistan over the past two years, especially in border areas, he said. In 2021, 4,83kg of drugs were seized in Tajikistan; in 2022, 4,165kg of drugs were seized.

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in 2021, 177,000 hectares were used for drug crops in Afghanistan and in 2022 - 233,000 hectares (56,000 hectares more).

Vohidzoda said the number of detentions of Afghan citizens in Tajikistan in connection with drug trafficking increased as the volume of drugs smuggled from Afghanistan to Tajikistan increased. While eight Afghan nationals were detained for drug-related crimes in Tajikistan in 2021, in 2022 there were 19.

A total of 24 foreigners, including citizens of Pakistan, Iran and Kyrgyzstan, were detained in Tajikistan for drug trafficking offenses in 2022. A total of 367 kilograms of drugs were seized from them.
