Armenia should officially recognize Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Hrant Bagratyan, former Prime Minister of Armenia and chairman of the opposition Freedom Party, stated about this during Friday’s National Assembly hearings on the ongoing Azerbaijani blockage of the Lachin corridor that links Artsakh to Armenia.

According to him, Armenia’s relations with Azerbaijan will not improve one way or another.

Also, Bagratyan presented four steps that should be taken by Armenia. According to the former PM, these steps will enable Armenia to get out of the current crisis.

"First of all, it is necessary to come up with a clear position on foreign policy orientations. It is necessary to put an end to ‘running’ from Russia to the West and vice versa. Maybe we should discuss the possibility of Armenia withdrawing from the [trilateral] statement of November 9, 2020," said Bagratyan.

He is convinced that all the provisions that are more or less beneficial to Armenia are temporary and de facto lose their force after five years, whereas the provisions that are beneficial for Azerbaijan are permanent.

In addition, Bagratyan considers it necessary for Armenia to formally recognize Artsakh as soon as possible.

"Relations with Azerbaijan will not further worsen from of that. After all, Baku is already planning another aggression against Armenia. We need a change of power. People should come [to power in Armenia] who are able to correctly assess the situation and take effective measures," said Hrant Bagratyan, considering a change of power in Armenia to be the most important of the aforementioned steps.
