European Union countries have sent search and rescue teams to help deal with the aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey, the European Commission said in a statement on its website.

"In an immediate response, the European Union has mobilised search and rescue teams for Türkiye following its request to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism," the statement said.

Search and rescue teams have been sent from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania. Also Italy and Hungary offered their assistance.

The official representative of the European Commission Balazs Ujvari said that so far there have been no requests for assistance from Syria.
