A newborn baby bound by an umbilical cord to its mother, who died in a massive earthquake on Monday, February 6, has been pulled from the rubble of a house in northern Syria. The infant was the only one of the family left alive, AFP reported.

"We heard a voice when we were digging. We raked through the dust and found the baby with an umbilical cord, we cut it, and my cousin took him to the hospital," said Khalil al-Suwadi, a distant relative of the baby.

A video of the rescue appeared on the Web. The footage shows a man running out from under the rubble of a house, holding a tiny infant covered in dust. A second man runs with a blanket to warm the baby in sub-zero temperatures, while a third man asks to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
