President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the death toll in the earthquakes that hit Turkey has exceeded 49 thousand.

"Eleven provinces have suffered from the unprecedented disasters. More than 49,000 citizens were killed, and more than 115,000 were injured," Erdogan said during his address at the summit of the Organization of Turkic States, in Ankara.

Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6, respectively, occurred nine hours apart on February 6 in Kahramanmaras Province in southeastern Turkey. These quakes affected 11 provinces of the country and its neighboring countries, including Syria. The Turkish authorities have called these quakes the "catastrophe of the century."
