Toivo Klaar, European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, has shared on his Twitter account the statement of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regarding the blockade of Nagorno Karabakh, saying that The ICRC should be able to act freely.

“The ICRC is doing a tremendous job in very challenging circumstances on the ground. It is important that they are able to operate freely. The EU is taking their warnings seriously,” he wrote.

ICRC had earlier stated that, despite persistent efforts, they are currently unable to deliver aid to Nagorno Karabakh through the Lachin Corridor and other routes, including Aghdam. “Our concern is that the humanitarian situation will further deteriorate,” the ICRC had said.

ICRC’s regional director for Eurasia, Ariane Bauer in turn had said that their humanitarian aid convoys are a lifeline for the population in this area and with those convoys blocked, their concern is that the humanitarian situation will further deteriorate.

“We are most worried about those who cannot help themselves. The sick and people with chronic diseases are particularly at risk, as are the elderly, infirm and children. For us to operate here, we need the sides to reach a humanitarian consensus. This is life-saving work, and it must be allowed to continue,” she had said.
