We support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia, and we are against any change of borders. Iran's ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, stated this in an interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am. Below is the text of this interview.
Mr. Ambassador, during the ongoing economic exhibition in Yerevan, you noted that Iran supports the territorial integrity of Armenia and will take steps in that regard. What steps did you mean?
We [i.e. Iran] have already started to take those steps. We support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia, and we are against any change of borders. We support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia as we recognize the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries. We are not against the opening of communication channels, we provided such channels to Azerbaijan as well. But all channels of communication should be under the control of the countries in whose territory they are located, especially in the case of Armenia.
But if Azerbaijan tries to open the so-called “Zangezur corridor” by force, what will Iran do? What help can it provide to Armenia?
As I said, we support the opening of communication channels, but they should be under the control of the Armenian government. Nothing will change by force.
Will Iran take steps to prevent such a development?
When I say Iran will support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia, everything becomes clear from that.
