Many expectations regarding Nagorno-Karabakh were related to the mediation of France and President Emmanuel Macron himself, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova recalled in an interview to RT France.

"Look what it led to. Paris tried to take over this mediation agenda and say that France would be better able to mediate than anyone else, especially Russia. While Russia was performing its functions as a mediator, there were really good, fundamental grounds for moving on the peaceful path of settlement... As soon as the Western ideology started to wedge itself into the situation, everything changed," Zakharova noted.

According to her, this can serve as a lesson for anyone who will turn to the West for mediation.

"After all, this time Paris didn't even think it was necessary to find any words to somehow explain itself. After all, at least in the last year, Paris constantly says that it is the main mediator, at least from the point of view of Yerevan," said the representative of the Russian MFA.
