TEHRAN.- A constituent meeting of the Press Union of the Islamic World was held on October 29 in Iranian capital. The meeting was attended by 143 media representatives from 47 countries, including also Russia and Canada.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is the initiator of the Union addressed participants with the opening speech. According to a member of the Union, expert in Islamic culture studies, representative of Russia Jannat Sergey Marcus, in his speech, Ahmadinejad said that the organization was not created to protect only the rights of Muslims and promote Islam, its task is to ensure social justice in the world, including Europe and U.S.

“Occupy Wall Street movement and persistent strikes in Europe have shown that most citizens of Western countries also suffer from social injustice just as countries of the east,” the expert quotes Ahmadinejad.

According to him, the creation of this organization is very important for the establishment of genuine democracy and pluralism around the world. He stressed the need to enable the readers to choose sources of information not only among the Western media, but also from alternative resources in order to show the events in the eyes of journalists coming from the principles of Islam.

“Unfortunately, majority of the Islamic world’s media outlets were previously focused on domestic audience. However, in recent years in Iran, there are such sources as TV Al Alam (Arabic) and Press TV (English). According to colleagues, soon a Spanish version for Latin America, as well as Chinese and Russian TV channels will be launched,” said Marcus.

Members of the constituent meeting of Press Union of the Islamic World adopted a resolution which stated that there is a need for an international union of media which will be an alternative to the western, imperialist, Zionist sources of information.
