The United States is trying to prevent a new war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein said on Tuesday as fire escalated between the adversaries on Lebanon's southern border, Reuters reported.

Hochstein, special envoy to U.S. President Joe Biden, said he was sent to Lebanon immediately after a short trip to Israel because the situation is "serious."

"We have seen an escalation over the last few weeks. And what President Biden wants is to avoid further escalation that will lead to more war," Hochstein said. Earlier, he met with the head of the Lebanese army and spoke to reporters after meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
