Three defendants accused of plotting the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the US have agreed to plead guilty in exchange for the death penalty to be commuted to life imprisonment, Pentagon sources say, reports The New York Times.

According to them, an agreement was reached in the case of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged main mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, and his two accomplices. They are kept in the Guantanamo prison in Cuba.

In exchange for eliminating the death penalty as a possible penalty, the three defendants have agreed to plead guilty to all the crimes they were charged with, including the murders of 2,976 people, notes the letter sent in this regard to the families of those killed in the 9/11 attacks. The defendants’ guilty plea could be announced as early as next week.
