Representatives of the respective departments of Armenia and Turkey met at the border in November 2024 to assess the technical needs of the Gyumri-Kars railway. This was informed by Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, Armen Simonyan, in response to a written request from Armenian News-NEWS.am. He added that the public will be further informed about the developments on this topic in due course.

Although the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia did not specify which government departments of Armenia are engaged in studying the current condition and problems of the Gyumri-Kars railway, taking into account that the Armenian government had forwarded our written request to the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, most likely this ministry is engaged in the process.

The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia added that based on preliminary estimates carried out within the framework of the Crossroads of Peace project of the Armenian government, the repair of the railway section from Gyumri to the Turkish border will cost around $32.4 million.

The aforesaid response by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia shows that there is no visible progress so far in the process of the possible operation of the Gyumri-Kars railway.

Earlier, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan had announced that Armenia and Turkey had already agreed to jointly assess the technical requirements for crossing the Armenian-Turkish border via the Gyumri-Kars railway. And in an interview with the Correio Braziliense magazine, Mirzoyan had stated that Armenian and Turkish experts were already studying the condition of the Gyumri-Kars railway.
