YEREVAN. – Biometric passports will be in use from this June in Armenia, newly appointed Office of Visas and Passports of Armenian Police head Hovhannes Kocharyan told in the interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am.

In response to the question when the electronic passports installation process will start, Kocharyan said legislative preparations were over in last November and the provision will enter into power this June. Thus, distribution of electronic passports and IDs will start in this period.

As for what is the advantage of the biometric passport, he said that it provides more opportunities for identifying a person, as it contains person’s biometric data, fingerprints, photo and signature. Besides, EU trusts it more as well and such passport owners pass on green road in the airports.

Regarding changes in connection to his appointment, Kocharyan said that they should preserve what is achieved and develop the service quality. Armenia will have parliamentary elections soon. Hence, police should assist the citizens to realize their election right. The Office has always made the election lists, however, additional steps will be taken to avoid faults.
