YEREVAN. – Davit Khitaryan, Vice President of the Judo Federation of Armenia, was one of the first Armenian judo referees to receive Class A referee’s ranking, and thus he received the right to officiate at the Olympic Games. Armenian News-NEWS.am interviewed Khitaryan, and below is an excerpt from the interview:

Our athletes Hovhannes Davtyan and Armen Nazaryan are vying for Olympic qualifications. Can we say that they will head to London?

They will definitely go, since Olympic qualification is secured for these two athletes. [But] Our athletes currently fell back a bit in the Olympic ranking list.

If they are unsuccessful in the upcoming competitions, could our athletes fall back [in the ranking] so much that they could remain outside of the Olympic ranking spots?

Even if our [athletes] become unsuccessful in other competitions, too, it is all the same. Our boys will not remain outside the [first] twenty two [spots]. But we have tasked our boys to enter the top eight, and this actually secures the road all the way to the quarterfinals. And one win in this stage virtually secures a medal.

And do your athletes have the chance to enter the top eight?

I believe they do.

Could our national team stand out with new judoists?

Definitely; we have many promising judoists who could achieve great success in a foreseeable future.
