The plan offered by the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan is the only possibility to put an end to the violations in Syria, British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs William Hague said in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Monday.

“We seldom arrive to unanimous agreement when there is a necessity to arrange the UN Security Council resolution. However, we agree that Annan’s plan is the only hope for Syria to put an end to the violations,” he said.

In his turn, Russian FM said that both Russia and UK desire to support Annan’s plan to secure political process by respecting sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria and with the participation of all sides, including the Syrian people and without any interference from abroad, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Lavrov, when several foreign players start to claim to change the authorities in Syria, their ‘honest desire to stop violations’ seems to be suspicious. Lavrov believes if stopping violations is priority, ‘then both the regime and the opposition should be forced to stop shooting at each other and sit around the table for talks.’
