Pope Francis and spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians patriarch Bartholomew prayed together Sunday inside Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Francis, Bartholomew and the leaders of the three main religious communities that share the church — Greek-Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic — sat together inside the church, AP reported.

The service was a historic event as there is the the status quo, according to which the times and and places of worship for each community are strictly regulated in common areas.

Pope continues his trip to the Middle East that includes Jordan, the Palestinian territory  and Israel.
