Japanese company Toyota Motor is planning to start mass-producing electric vehicles by 2020, Nikkei reported.

In 2017, the company will create an in-house team for planning and development of electric vehicles that can run more than 300km on a single charge.

The platform for models such as the Prius hybrid or Corolla sedan is being considered for use in building an electric sport utility vehicle.

The start of mass production of the electric cars is set to coincide with Tokyo Olympic Games-2020    when the world will be watching Japan.
