YEREVAN. – From now on, Armenia will become a multimodal transport country between Europe and Iran.

Multimodal transport, which is also known as combined transport, is the transportation of goods under a single contract, but with at least two different means of transport.

This week two containers were transported to Georgia, via sea; then to Armenia, via railway; and, subsequently to Iran, by vehicles, as a trial version.

First Deputy Minister of Transport, Communication and Information Technology of Armenia, Artur Arakelyan, noted that this multimodal transport project was discussed for the past two years, since one of the priorities of the ministry is to increase international shipping via Armenia.

South Caucasus Railway CJSC Director General Sergey Valko, for his part, added that this trial transportation of goods confirmed that this project is realistic. In his words, this model of shipping is not only time efficient, but dependable.

“The seal, which is put on the container in Europe, remains intact until the cargo reaches [the Iranian capital city of] Tehran,” added Valko.

“Aside from increasing economic activity, the creation of this [multimodal transport] route also has strategic importance,” noted Artur Arakelyan, in turn. “Given the closed borders [of Armenia] with two [of its] neighboring countries [i.e. Azerbaijan and Turkey], it’s extremely important that we [i.e. Armenia] have a stably operating transport corridor.” 

In the Armenian official’s conviction, this project will also contribute to the development of Armenia’s trade with neighboring Iran.
