Since 2005, the incarceration rate in Armenia has grown by 48 percent.

The country has thus become one of the countries where the incarceration rate has grown the most during the recent ten years, as per the Annual penal statistics report of the Council of Europe (CoE).

According to the document, Armenia has been included in the list of countries with the worst incarceration rate indicator, the total number of inmates in Armenia increasing from 2,822 in 2005 to 3,888 in 2015.

It is at the same time noted that the share of females (4.4%) and foreigners (3.2%) is low.

Apart from this, Armenia had the highest mortality rate among all the countries surveyed (95.5 per 10,000 inmates),

Average daily expense per inmate was 10.3 euro, which is 5 times lower than the CoE median of 52.36 euro, the reports says.
