It is not fair at all that Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), which is a part of Europe, be left out of the attention of European institutions.

The Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic/NKR) Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman), Ruben Melikyan, on Friday stated the above-said at an event to provide assistance to Artsakh by European humanitarian organizations.

He added that European engagement is important in political terms, first and foremost.

In Melikyan’s words, the events that occurred in April 2016—when Azerbaijan unleashed a large-scale military aggression against Karabakh—should be considered a dividing line.

“After these events, I see an apparent increase in the [Armenian] diaspora organizations’ attention toward key Artsakh issues,” the NKR Ombudsman noted, in particular.

Ruben Melikyan added that ever since 2015, Artsakh has considered the European Convention on Human Rights as obligatory for the country.
