YEREVAN. – Paruyr Hayrikyan, chairman of the opposition National Self-Determination Union (NSU) Party of Armenia, on Monday started a hunger strike outside the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) building, and in protest of the “unconstitutional actions” by the CEC.

The NSU leader wished to hold a signature campaign to organize constitutional amendments, and he had petitioned to the CEC on this matter.

The CEC, however, had responded that Armenia’s Law on Referendum does not envisage civil initiative.

And “guided by civic duty against the CEC’s unconstitutional actions,” Hayrikyan has declared a hunger strike, and he demands the fulfillment of the Constitution’s requirement.
