The Iraqi Federal Court on Monday ruled unconstitutional the Kurdistan independence referendum, RIA Novosti reports citing the country's news agency.

Earlier, the Supreme Federal Court in Baghdad stated that the Iraqi constitution does not contain articles indicating the possibility of separation of any part of the country.

Autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan held a referendum on independence from Iraq on September 25, where about 93% of Kurds voted for the independence referendum. Baghdad neither agreed on a referendum, nor recognized its results.

After the Kurds held this referendum, Baghdad decided to implement a series of sanctions against the Kurdish regional government, and also began a military operation in the disputed autonomy, primarily in the province of Kirkuk.

The parties try to conduct a dialogue, but contradictions persist on a number of issues.
