YEREVAN. – The UN adopted a convention in 2007 to protect the rights of people with physical disabilities, and Armenia signed it, head of Unison NGP Armen Alaverdyan stated this at a meeting with journalists on December 2.

However, according to Alaverdyan, there are no real positive changes for people with disabilities in Armenia yet, as the country has not signed an additional voluntary protocol.

"This is important, because if Armenia signs this protocol, people can apply to the international committee with their own private complaints", Alaverdyan explained to journalists, noting that this fact does not suit some officials, since the number of complaints will increase. In this case, according to the expert, Armenia did not need to sign this convention at all.
