The European Union wants to restrict UK access to the European internal market if London violates previously agreed conditions over EU withdrawal process, the BBC reported.

The EU hopes that such a tool will allow Brussels to react more quickly, without waiting for the European Court’s decisions on conflict issues.

Britain intends to withdraw from the EU in March 2019. However, there will be a transition phase, during which London will continue to enjoy the benefits of access to the EU internal market.

At the request of the European Commission, the provision on the restricting access to the internal market of the EU by UK should become part of the treaty on the conditions of UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. This point, however, still needs to be approved by the governments of the EU countries.
